You’ve packed your belongings. You’ve labeled your boxes. You’ve hired a moving company. Now, how do you deal with the movers when they arrive? After all, strangers you’ve never met will be handling your valuable belongings.
Here are common questions and answers about moving etiquette that will ensure a great moving day for both you and the movers.
Can the movers help you pack?
It’s best to pack most of your things yourself, as packing takes a significant amount of time. The movers can help you with packing, but be aware that it will take more time and cost more money.
Should you alert the movers to valuable items?
While most movers are experienced and knowledgeable in treating valuables, it’s good to point out your belongings that are most valuable so the movers can be especially careful.
What should you do during the moving process?
Leave the moving to the experts, who have a process they are familiar with. Be present to help pack your belongings, take responsibility for valuables, inventory your items, and ensure that all of your belongings are moved.
Should you provide lunch?
Providing lunch is not required, but is always a good idea. Not only does it increase happiness and productivity of the movers, but it may also save time. If you decide not to provide lunch, you should definitely provide water.
Are the movers expected to clean up?
The movers typically clean up clutter created during the moving process, but do not clean your home. Leave that to your family or to a house cleaning company. If the movers created a mess, it’s okay to request them to pick up a bit.
Should you tip the movers? How much should you tip?
While tipping is not required, it’s always a good idea to reward your movers for a job well done. There’s no set amount for tipping, but some moving companies recommend about 5% of the total cost. Make sure the tip can be split evenly between each of the movers.
